Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition
characterized by deficits in social communication, restricted and repetitive
behaviours, sensory processing difficulties, and adaptive functioning
impairments. Early identification and comprehensive assessment are important
for understanding developmental needs and planning appropriate interventions.
This case report describes the psychoeducational assessment of a
4-year-3-month-old Chinese boy, anonymously referred to as Bob, who presented
with developmental delay and characteristics associated with ASD. A
multi-battery assessment approach was conducted using the Sensory
Profile-Caregiver Questionnaire (SP-CQ), Gilliam Autism Rating Scale–Third
Edition (GARS-3), and Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales–Second Edition
(Vineland-II). Results from the SP-CQ indicated sensory seeking, sensory
sensitivity, multisensory processing difficulties, and possible symptoms
associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The GARS-3
findings suggested a very likely probability of ASD with Level 2 severity,
particularly in restrictive/repetitive behaviours and social communication
difficulties. Vineland-II results demonstrated significant deficits across
communication, daily living, socialization, and motor skills domains,
indicating poor adaptive functioning and characteristics consistent with mild
Intellectual Disability (ID). Overall, the findings suggest that Bob
demonstrated developmental characteristics associated with ASD and mild ID, alongside
sensory processing challenges. This case highlights the importance of
comprehensive multi-battery assessments in supporting early identification,
differential diagnosis, and individualized intervention planning for preschool
children with neurodevelopmental concerns.
